Samsung SCS-2U01 3G Verizon Wireless Network Extender Indoor CDMA/EVDO Cellular - Remanufactured

  • I needed to do something to make our cell phones usable at home. We had signal, but not strong and just moving a couple of feet could result in a dropped call. I looked at cell phone boosters, but it looked like antenna placement was going to be too tricky to get the coverage I wanted. I tried every way I could think of to get Verizon to sell me a new 3G Network Extender for less than $250+tax, but I couldn\'t get them to budge. I was concerned about buying a \"remanufactured\" Network Extender, but the savings were too good to pass up.I have had the unit set up for 5 days now and it seems to be mostly solving our problem. My biggest challenges have been related to the fact that no manual or warranty card (nor any paperwork of any kind, other than a packing slip) was included in the shipment. As reviewer \"Tom\" said below, even a remanufactured unit should come with a manual, shouldn\'t it? And, unlike \"Tom\", I was not able to get Amazon to give me anything for my trouble. Amazon would only offer to take the shipment back and give me a refund, which is not a very good way to solve the fact that I just wanted a manual and warranty card. They pointed the finger at ecom and ecom initially pointed the finger right back at Amazon. An ecom rep did call me today and give me a phone number for Samsung, but that still doesn\'t feel like it really solves my problem. So, buyer beware: You will need to find your own manual online in order to learn how to set the unit up. I went to verizonwireless.com/networkextender and looked through their setup help until I found a link to the manual ([...]). Also, I\'m not sure what I\'m going to do if I need to take advantage of the 90-day warranty, since I have absolutely no warranty information with the unit.In setting the unit up, I faced a challenge in getting a GPS signal when the unit was placed where I needed to place it to get a good cell signal over most of my house. I had to put the unit down on my desk to be able to see enough sky to get a GPS signal. What I did was let the unit sit there until it acquired the GPS signal and then move it (without unplugging it) up into its final position. The GPS light is now flashing red, but the unit is working fine. If I ever lose power, I\'ll need to repeat these steps to get the GPS signal back. The cell signal around our house was a little disappointing, given what I had read in other reviews. 5000 square feet is a circle of about a 40 foot radius. If I move 40 feet away in our house, I\'m down to 0-1 bars. I called Verizon tech support to see if there was any way to increase the power of the Network Extender and they said they didn\'t think there was and that it normally covers a radius of about 30 feet. What this all means in my house is that I can\'t get the farthest reaches of the house without the Network Extender signal dropping out.The Network Extender works very well where we spend most of our time in the living/dining rooms and kitchen (all within about 20-25 feet of the unit). We can now reliably use our phones and receive calls and texts at home. We don\'t use our phones for data, but I did some testing and it seemed to work fine.
  • HistoryMy wife and I recently switched to Verizon and have experienced countless dropped calls at our home. Apparently the \"can you here me now guy\" never made it to my street. I couldn\'t decide whether to opt for the network extender (femtocell) or a cell repeater. I actually preferred the cell repeater because I can\'t stand the idea that I pay Verizon for no service at my house and that their idea to fill the gap is to rely on the customer using their own internet connection to boost signal, why should Verizon benefit. WI-EX is suppose to release a 4G cell repeater in June and I am still hoping for future expansion of 4G in my area so I opted for the cheapest option. The cheapest option for me at the time was the refurbished SCS-2U01 network extender.PerformanceDoes it work?....yes, Does it work as well as you would like?....no, The 40 ft radius range is simply inadequate. I found that the signal would drop 1 bar for every 10 feet. I also had reverted to mounting this between the floor joist of the main floor (luckily I have a basement) as close to center of house as possible to maximize coverage throughout the house. Surprisingly the GPS lock was more forgiving than I thought, I used the GPS extension cable and ran it to within a few feet of an outside wall below the main floor and still picked up the GPS lock required.SetupI read the reviews regarding the troubles some folks were faced with in activating the network extender. My refurbished network extender fell into the category of \"currently activated under someone elses account.\" I am not certain if Verizon is becoming more understanding of the refurbished/used network extender circumstance but in my case I called, supplied the MAC address and was informed that the network extender was currently activated and would need to be deactivated by the previous owner before I can activate on my account. I explained to the tech that \"How could this be!\" \"I purchased a factory refurbished model from Amazon.\" I am not sure if any key words were spoken but the tech began typing away. Apparently they can clear the MAC at Verizon without requiring the previous owner because within a couple of minutes the tech had the network extender activated under my account. Also of note, 5-10 minutes were typical for me from \"plug in\" to signal broadcast so you may need to be a bit patient as you find the best location for your network extender.Final thoughtsYes it does work, but don\'t expect a huge radius, I have a baby monitor that will beat the pants off this.I hope others that run into the account activation concern are as fruitful as I was.
